Scrumptious Shawlette

I love the yarns by Mosaic Moon, absolutely love them! I love to go to MM’s website and browse their yarns, thinking of what I should buy. Of course, I have no actual project in mind most of the time. I had two skeins of their Aran weight yarn in my stash since this summer and have not been able to find the proper pattern to fit the yarn. After spending countless hours browsing ravelry and pinterest looking for the proper pattern, I decided to just go ahead and make my own.

I got out my handy stitch reference book and looked for something simple, with minimal repeats. I ended up settling on a slip stitch ribbing for the body of the shawlette. However, I did the stitch wrong and instead of a slipped stitch ribbing,  I have more of a textured slip stitch pattern. AND I loved the results! I followed this up with a ruffled border. This pattern works great for variegated yarns and adds a nice thick texture.

Scrumptious Shawlette Pattern:

Yarn: Mosaic Moon, BFL Aran, 100% wool, 205 yards, 2 skeins. Warning!- you will need all of the skeins.

Needles: US Size 8 (5 mm), 32 inch, or larger length, circular needle to hold large number of stitches.

Gauge: 18 stitches by 24 rows equals 4 inches (in body of pattern, no need to do a swatch).

Gauge is not necessary for this project.

Pattern:

Garter Tab cast-on: CO 3 stitches. Knit 6 rows. Pick up and knit 6 stitches from the side and 3 from the CO. (9 stitches.)

Set Up Row (WS): K2, PM, P2, PM, P1, PM, P2, PM, K2

Body of Shawlette

Row 1 (RS): K2, SM, YO, (K1, SL1PW)* repeat until 1 stitch before next marker, K1, YO, SM, K1, SM, YO, (K1, SL1PW)* repeat until 1 stitch before next marker, K1, YO, SM, K2.

Row 2 (WS): K2, Purl until last 2 stitches, K2 (slipping markers as you come to them)

Repeat until desired length. End with a WS row. For the sample, there were 109 stitches between each textured slip stitch section (223 stitches total), giving a length of approximately 18 inches.

Increase row (RS): K2, YO, K1, (KFB)* until marker, YO, SM, K1, SM, YO, K1, (KFB)* until marker, YO, SM, K2. (223)

Purl 1 row.

Repeat rows 1 and 2 from the body of the shawl for one inch (439 stitches total). End with a WS row.

Knit 3 rows.

BO loosely and block shawl.

End measurements: 37 inches wide by 19 inches long.

Notes:

As mentioned above, you will need all of the yarn for this project (every little last bit!). If you are worried about cutting it short, I would recommend ending the body of the shawlette a little early. If you want a longer shawl, get a third skein of yarn.

Also, the textured stitch pattern results in a dense, warm fabric. If you want more drape, go up to a size nine needle.

This is the first pattern using the textured slip stitch. My goal is that all of the patterns I create in 2017 use the same stitch.

Enjoy!
